Un Libro es una pieza sobre la experiencia de ser una encuadernadora, restauradora y colombiana en los Estados Unidos. Tiene su propio lenguaje, y en forma de libro, el contenido impreso explica el proceso de encuadernación y conservación de libros con palabras, líneas de hilo, piezas de papel, y líneas de texto hechas con retazos de lenguajes. Comencé a escribir este libro a medida que aprendía a encuadernar y reparar libros. Hay un acto performático cuando se hace algo con las manos, en este caso, un libro. El libro conecta con nuestro cuerpo por sus procesos artesanales pero también por él mismo. Nombrar un libro y sus partes, es reconocernos a nosotros mismos en él, su cuerpo es un espejo del nuestro. Mi cuerpo cambia para acomodarse a la práctica de la encuadernación, y el libro cambia también, mostrándose a sí mismo y sus debilidades en el taller de restauración: los libros envejecen. El trabajo de un restaurador de libros es mi manera de cuidar de otros: yo cuido su historias, memorias, imaginación y sabiduría; todo proveniente del cuerpo humano, grabado en libros que, también, viven en el tiempo y se degradan en las múltiples capas de materia.
Este libro es también parte de una investigación sobre el performance en las artes del libro. Como cantante, introduce la voz de la encuadernadora y su cuerpo en esta pieza. En términos de performance y notación, este libro traduce la finura del hilo a cuerpos danzantes y voces fragmentadas de lenguajes. El lenguaje híbrido del spanglish se traduce a una fluidez y cambio constante de en la interpretación de las palabras. Un Libro es 10 x 7.5 pulgadas, tamaño que hace referencia al formato de las partituras musicales, y tiene 96 páginas.
Fue publicado en Febrero de 2021, en Iowa City, por Canto Press. Tiene una edición estándar de 25 copias encuadernadas en papel manual impreso con tipografía móvil con estructura con cintas. La edición de lujo es de 5, y viene con una copia con encuadernación artística en bradel con fotos impresas digitalmente en papel japonés hecho por mí, y cubierto en papel manual, cuero e incrustaciones de hilo; y una copia estándar, metidas en una caja tipo almeja con cuna para permitir mejor lectura. Las dimensiones de la caja son de 8 x 11.25 x 2.25 pulgadas.

About the book
Un Libro is a book about the experience of being a woman bookbinder, book conservator and Colombian in the US. It has its own language; in the shape of a book, the printed content explains the process of bookmaking and conservation with words, lines of thread, pieces of paper, and lines of text made with pieces of languages.
I started writing this book as I was learning bookbinding and working as a book conservation technician. There is a performative act when crafting something, in this case, a book. The book connects with our body by its craft but also by itself. To name a book and its parts, is to recognize ourselves in it, its body is a mirror of ours. My body changes to accommodate to the bookbinding practice, and the book changes too, showing itself and its weakness at the conservation lab: books age. The job of a book conservator is my way of taking care of others. I take care of history, memories, imagination and knowledge; all coming from the human body, all engraved in books that, too, live in time and degrade in their many layers of materials.
This book is also part of a research about performance in the book arts. As a vocal performer myself, I introduce the voice of the bookbinder and their body in this piece. In terms of performance and notation, this book translates the fineness of the thread to the lightness of dancing bodies and fragmented voices and languages, the hybrid-language writing translates to a fluent constant shift in the interpretation of words.
The book is 10x7.5’’ to speak to the traditional format for music scores, with 96 pages. It was published in February 2021, Iowa City, by Canto Press. The standard edition of 25 is handbound with a letterpress printed paper cover on a slotted tape binding. The deluxe edition of 5, comes with one fine bound bradel binding book with digitally printed photographs on Japanese paper, and handmade paper, leather and thread in-lays and on-lays, and one copy of the standard edition in a clam shell box with cradle, to allow for future collaborative performances between readers and performers. This book was digitally printed on a laser printer on Classic Crest paper, text 80, smooth.
